Pituitary Dwarfism is one cause of dwarfism, caused by growth hormone deficiency. It is categorized by short stature (adult height of 4 feet 10 inches and under) with a general lack of growth in the body, otherwise known as Proportionate Short Stature (PSS). Usually the head, torso and limbs will all be proportionate but shorter than normal. It can sometimes be diagnosed before birth, but often this type of dwarfism is not diagnosed until restricted growth becomes more obvious as a child gets older. Diagnosis can involve growth hormone simulation tests to look for deficiency and a brain scan to assess the pituitary gland that makes growth hormone.
