Short-term or long-term knee pain is familiar to many of us. This common complaint causes negative emotions, limits movements and quality of life. Nonetheless, with effective treatment, these problems can be solved.
The knee joint is the largest joint in the human body. It is a complex system of joint junctions, tendons, cartilage, muscles and bones; therefore there are a variety of causes for the pain.
A few of the most common causes of knee pain are osteoarthritis (a degenerative condition of the joint), ligament strain, tendonitis, popliteal cysts, dislocation of the kneecap, as well as post-surgery pain, runner’s knee, rheumatoid arthritis and many others. Joints can be damaged by incorrectly executed physical exercises, putting too much strain on the joints, as well as lack of physical activity and obesity.
The intensity and location of knee joint pain will vary depending on the cause.
Many cases are followed by local redness, swelling, instability of the joint, limited movement and inability to extend your leg. A damaged joint can feel warmer when compared to a healthy joint. While performing an objective test of the joint one can hear crepitation – cracking sound – in the joint during a movement.
