Tonsillopharyngitis is an acute streptococcus infection of the pharynx, palatine tonsils, or both. There are many different types of streptococcal bacteria, and infections vary in severity from mild throat infections to life-threatening infections of the blood or organs.
Symptoms may include sore throat, difficulty swallowing, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, and fever. If left untreated, streptococcal infections can be life threatening or cause serious complications involving the heart, joints and kidneys.
