If you suffer from joint pain caused injury or arthritis our orthopaedic specialist may suggest a steroid joint injection (corticosteroid). Steroids help to reduce inflammation which aids the reduction of pain and swelling in your joints to allow them to move more easily.
The pain relief can last for a couple of weeks to a few months or longer. It will depend on what condition you have and on the type of steroid used. Steroid injections can treat conditions in the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, wrist and hip.
Steroid injections are often used with other medicines and physiotherapy. Such injections are not a cure for the condition affecting your joint, but they may ease symptoms. Your doctor will advise on the amount and frequency of steroid injections during the course of your treatment.
During your consultation, the doctor will detail possible side effects and complications and how they can affect you.
